The Basic Formula
Weight conversion between kilograms (kg) and pounds (lbs) relies on a single fixed relationship:
- 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds
- 1 pound = 0.453592 kilograms
For most everyday purposes, rounding to 2.205 (kg to lbs) or 0.4536 (lbs to kg) is accurate enough.
How to Convert Kilograms to Pounds
To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply the kilogram value by 2.20462:
Formula: lbs = kg × 2.20462
Examples
- 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.32 lbs
- 5 kg × 2.20462 = 11.02 lbs
- 100 kg × 2.20462 = 220.46 lbs
How to Convert Pounds to Kilograms
To convert pounds to kilograms, multiply the pound value by 0.453592:
Formula: kg = lbs × 0.453592
Examples
- 150 lbs × 0.453592 = 68.04 kg
- 10 lbs × 0.453592 = 4.54 kg
- 200 lbs × 0.453592 = 90.72 kg
Quick Reference Conversion Table
| Kilograms (kg) | Pounds (lbs) |
|---|---|
| 1 | 2.20 |
| 5 | 11.02 |
| 10 | 22.05 |
| 20 | 44.09 |
| 50 | 110.23 |
| 75 | 165.35 |
| 100 | 220.46 |
A Mental Shortcut
If you need a quick estimate and don't have a calculator, try this mental trick:
- Double the kg value (multiply by 2)
- Add 10% of the original kg value
Example: 60 kg → 60 × 2 = 120, plus 10% of 60 (6) = 126 lbs (exact answer: 132.28 lbs — the shortcut is less accurate for larger numbers, but useful for quick estimates).
A more accurate shortcut: multiply by 2, then add 1/10 of your original doubled number. Or simply use: kg × 2.2 = approximate lbs.
Why Two Different Systems?
The metric system (kilograms) is used by most countries worldwide and is the standard in science and medicine. The imperial system (pounds) is primarily used in the United States and, to a lesser extent, the United Kingdom. Knowing how to move between both systems is a practical skill for travel, cooking, fitness, and international communication.
Summary
- Kg → Lbs: multiply by 2.20462
- Lbs → Kg: multiply by 0.453592
- Quick estimate: kg × 2.2 ≈ lbs
